Understanding the Powder
Coating Process

Surface Preparation

The key to a long lasting powder coat finish is in the preparation of the metal. Proper prep will depend on a few factors including the product substrate of the part, the condition of the part’s substrate, and the performance requirement for the powder coating. Surface is inspected, chemically stripped to remove previous paint and sandblasted to remove dust and corrosion. Sandblasting not only ensures a bare, clear surface, it helps to provide texture for the powder coat to adhere to.

Powder Application

Powder coating uses an electrostatic process and curing to adhere the powder to the surface. Powder coating is applied using a spray gun that creates an electrostatic charge to attract the powder particles to a grounded surface. Please note all areas that do not need coating are masked off before coating. It protects these areas from the coating process and ensures clean threads or machined areas.

Curing

Inside the curing oven, the powder melts to form a continuous film across the surface of a part. Powder coating oven temperatures range from 325℉ to 450℉. Depending on the material, thickness and shape of the parts, curing may take ten minutes or over an hour. The curing process gives the powder coating its increased durability and professional finish. However, curing the powder coat for too long at too high a temperature can result in overbaking, which can make the film too hard and brittle, and can also affect the color and gloss.
